Japanese Dancing

Mary Ohno conducts “Quick-Mastering Classes” in Japanese dancing (NIHON BUYOO) for those American or Japanese enthusiasts at Tacoma Community College, Seattle Central Community College and at her studio in Tacoma, Washington under Kabuki Academy. Her school is called “Hanyagi School”, which is one of the most popular dancing schools in Japan. She has studied classical Japanese dance for 50 years and earned the professional license and its title of “Hanayagi Fumiryu” in July 1966.

For the very beginner students, lessons include how to bow or walk properly with kimono and also Japanese greetings such as “Yoroshiku onegai-shimasu” “Arigatoo gozaimashita”, etc. The very basic steps (SHIGUSA) are learned with Japanese music by using sleeves, dancing fan, tenugui (dancing towel) and other stage props.

Periodically, she holds a small recital for students and encourages her students to perform with stage costumes in front of an audience.

You can also take her Kimono Dressing course and Stage Makeup course, and learn various styles of Kabuki style dancing. She offers Kimono Dressing and Stage Makeup classes for individuals or groups, from time to time.
